Mississippi River flooding shuts down Tunica County casino

Published 4:55 pm Wednesday, March 6, 2019

ROBINSONVILLE, Miss. (AP) — A north Mississippi casino is closed because Mississippi River flooding is partially covering its access road.

Local media report the Fitz Casino in Tunica County closed Sunday at the behest of county emergency managers.

The casino says on its Facebook page that there’s no flooding in its parking lot or casino.

The county’s other six casinos remain open.

County Emergency Management Director Leron Weeks says Mississippi River flooding is at its highest since 2011, when most of the county’s casinos were closed. The Mississippi appears to have crested Tuesday at 52.5 feet at Tunica. That’s the second-highest level ever recorded after 2011.

A number of residential camps unprotected by levees are also flooded, with remaining residents traveling to elevated homes by boat.

The Tunica County Riverpark is also closed.

The Horseshoe Casino is expected to reopen today at 4:00 p.m., making it the third of Tunica’s nine casinos to open again after the flooding, according to the Commercial Appeal of Memphis. Goldstrike Casino and Tunica Roadhouse were the first to reopen.

All of the casinos closed a little over two weeks ago when the Mississippi River flooded the area. For photos of the flooding check out this blog post, and Gaming Smart, which has a good photo and a video of the flood conditions. Here’s a link to Tunica Travel that will have all the very, very latest information.

Goldstrike Casino has a nice little message on their homepage, thanking their 1,400 employees and the employees of MGM Resorts International for their hard work in getting the casino open again. I would imagine that there certainly was a lot of hard work involved once the high water went down. Flooding makes a horrible mess. Believe me, I know from experience.

As some of you may already know, the casinos themselves are on barges which, of course, float. Presumably there was no flooding in the actual casinos, but the hotels and parking lots were inundated, as we saw from the pictures.

Reopening the casinos is going to go a long way toward getting the economy of the area back to normal. Tunica, Mississippi, is a place you might call “casino dependent” for its livelihood, and I’m sure the people working at those three casinos will be happy to get back to work. Here’s hoping all nine of them are up and running again soon.

I’ve had a few questions about the Tunica Airport, and it seems to be operating just fine. I just spoke to a Mr. Bonds at the air traffic control center, and all is well at the airport, so if you’re thinking of flying in, go ahead and make your reservations.

Most of you are probably aware that Tunica, Mississippi, is just south of Memphis, Tennessee, so in addition to visiting the casinos, it’s a great jumping-off point for a visit to Memphis. You’ve got to see Graceland at least once! And then there is Memphis in May, which is a lot of fun with live music, the great clubs on Beale Street, where “The Blues” was born; fantastic food, especially the barbeque, and lots of people from all over the world. As far as the barbeque is concerned, you simply must go the The Rendezvous Restaurant. It’s right downtown — in an alley of all places, but many people, myself included, think the Rendezvous has the best ribs in all the world. I can practically taste them as I write!

Even if you decide to just stay put at the casino hotel, you’ll find some excellent, soulful cooking there too. Local chefs add that southern touch that makes things just a little spicier and very tasty. Just a nice, relaxing getaway for the weekend at one of the casino hotels would be nice too, and a great way to kick off the summer. Go and have fun!
